Thomas specialised in water resources engineering before moving to the United Kingdom. Following a year working as a consulting hydrologist, he spent a decade working as a research scientist at the Natural Environment Research Council's (NERC) Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), where he headed research into hydrological extremes.
