Urban Greenspace & People Call

RECLAIM Network Plus has funded 9 projects via this funding call for small research projects. Each project costing approx. £40k will explicitly address gaps in our knowledge of GBGI effectiveness against multiple outcomes, including social justice and equity.


Project Title - Investigating the Use of Co-Design to Create an Inclusive and Accessible Green Space

Thuy Nguyen - PhD Candidate, London Imperial College

Aim - The project adopts a co-design approach to explore the factors preventing different social groups from using and accessing green spaces and co-produce strategies to overcome these with participants.

URBAN GREENSPACE AND PEOPLE PROJECTS

Project Title - Community perceptions of new greenspace interventions: the case of Rhyl, North Wales

PI - Prof Thora Tenbrink, Professor of Linguistics, Bangor University

Aim - The project will add to existing consultation insights and biodiversity data from previous GI initiatives in Rhyl, and use new models to calculate additional benefits from carbon, air quality, cooling, flooding and noise.

Project Title - Urban rewilding aesthetics & people's needs into multifunctional blue and green infrastructure design

PI - Dr Alessio Russo, Senior Lecturer in Landscape Architecture, University of Gloucestershire

Aim - This project investigates both the challenges and the multi-functional benefits of rewilding in urban contexts.

Project Title - CoGREEN: Citizen Scientists-led Demonstration of the Multiple Co-Benefits of Green Infrastructure Intervention along the Road-Facing Perimeter

PI - Dr Abhijith Valappil, University of Surrey

Aim - The aim is to construct an aesthetically-pleasing nature-based green infrastructure along the road-facing perimeter of Sandfield Primary school and to investigate how it impacts air pollution, noise levels and air temperature in the playground and classrooms.

Project Title - Catchment-scale benefits (flow reduction) and dis-benefits (debris blocking risk) of green-grey infrastructure in urban rivers

PI - Dr Thomas Kjeldsen, Senior Lecturer, University of Bath

Aim - To test a proof-of-concept for a novel urban solution using machine-learning assisted image analysis to identify and forecast blocking of trash screens in urban rivers.

Project Title - Clean Air Gardens - Unveiling the Power of Domestic Gardens: Can they enhance local air quality and mitigate heat stress?

Karina Corada-Perez, Research Fellow, University of East London

Aim - Investigate how domestic gardens impact local air quality and temperature regulation, and how this impact is linked to the spatial configuration of planting in gardens.

Project Title - LivGBGI: Living Lab Demonstration of GBGI’s Multiple Co-benefits (heatwave, flood, drought & noise)

PI - Dr Sisay Debele, Research Fellow, University of Surrey

Aim - The main objective of the project is to build evidence for the co-benefits of GBGI against heatwaves.
