Webinar #26 - Nature-based solutions in Southend, UK & fighting air pollution with gardens

This webinar included two speakers:

  • Dr Karina Corada-Perez, Air Quality & Green Infrastructure Research Fellow, Sustainability Research Institute, University of East London: Greening the urban landscape: The potential of domestic gardens for enhanced air quality and thermal comfort

Webinars will share best-practice and facilitate knowledge exchange between practitioners, researchers, policymakers, businesses, environmental groups, charities and individuals interested in implementation of green-blue-grey infrastructure for making our vulnerable living spaces more healthy, sustainable and resilient.


Speakers 

Jo Matthews Principal Engineer, Civil Engineering, Environment & Place, Southend-on-Sea City Council

Title of the talk:
Integrating nature-based solutions across the City of Southend

Biography :   
Jo Matthews is a Chartered Principal Civil Engineer and NEC Project Manager with over twenty years’ experience working in both the highways and flood and coastal erosion management sectors, with particular interest in NBS, sustainable water management and hydro-citizenship. Jo has delivered numerous capital and revenue projects throughout the Essex area as well as being involved in incident duty functions and community engagement roles. Jo is the project sponsor for the FCRIP project, Catchment to Coast and also leads on flood and coastal strategy at Southend on Sea City Council, in addition to acting as LLFA Manager.


Dr Karina Corada-Perez
Air Quality & Green Infrastructure Research Fellow, Sustainability Research Institute, University of East London

Title of the talk: “Greening the urban landscape: The potential of domestic gardens for enhanced air quality and thermal comfort” 

Biography:
Dr Karina Corada-Perez
is an interdisciplinary environmental chemist, currently working as a Research Fellow specialising in Air Quality and Green Infrastructure at the Sustainability Research Institute at the University of East London. Karina is highly skilled in solving the intricate issues surrounding urban environmental challenges, focusing on promoting green justice by enhancing air quality. She obtained a master's in Planning and Environmental Management and recently finished her PhD studies at the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London.
