Designing for Recovery: The Role of Multisensory Environments in Promoting Mental Health

Discover how London’s green spaces can do more than just look beautiful—they can actively support mental health.

In this new video and blog, Designing for Recovery: The Role of Multisensory Environments in Promoting Mental Health, Dr. Shimeng Hao explores how sight, sound, and scent shape people’s experiences of urban nature.

Led by Dr. Shimeng Hao (UCL) with partners at London South Bank University, this UKRI-funded RECLAIM Network Plus project investigates which sensory elements best reduce stress and restore mental energy. From birdsong and water sounds to the fragrance of plants, our research aims to create evidence-based design guidelines that help planners, architects, and councils make cities healthier, more inclusive, and more resilient.

Launch of the GREENIN Micro Network Plus

Climate change is reshaping our indoor environments, with rising temperatures, fluctuating humidity, and shifting air quality presenting new challenges for health and wellbeing. While outdoor greening strategies such as green roofs are well studied, the role of indoor nature-based solutions remains underexplored.

The GREENIN Micro Network Plus aims to fill this gap by investigating how indoor plants and greening strategies can enhance air quality, thermal comfort, and humidity control across diverse building types. Bringing together an interdisciplinary network, the project envisions healthier, more adaptive, and climate-resilient indoor spaces.

Join us for the Launch Webinar on 22nd October 2025 at 1pm (BST), where the GREENIN team will introduce the initiative, share its research agenda, and open discussions on the future of indoor greening. Register here NOW.
