Urban Greening
“How to” Toolkit
for Local Authorities, Councillors and Officers
The Urban Greening “How-To” Toolkit is a practical, evidence-based resource designed to help local authorities, councillors, and community organisations plan and implement nature-based solutions that make towns and cities healthier, more resilient, and more sustainable.
Developed through the RECLAIM Network Plus with the help of local authorities, academics and charities, the toolkit provides clear, accessible guidance on using green infrastructure—such as trees, green roofs, ponds, and canals—to tackle major urban challenges including air pollution, flooding, heat, noise, and biodiversity loss.
Structured as a series of concise fact sheets, it offers recommended actions, key considerations, and common pitfalls for each challenge. By bridging scientific research and practical application, the toolkit aims to empower decision-makers to integrate urban greening effectively across sectors, maximising environmental, social, and economic benefits.
